Introduction

So you have decided to take on the noble task of protecting the station, throwing yourself in harms way to nobly protect the crew and thwart those that wish to do it harm! (Or you just want an excuse to legally beat the clown, either is vaild) Anyway your job is to protect the crew from themselves and the elements that would wish to do them harm.

Challenge

Security is the hardest department in the game to play as you will be expected to resolve conflicts and you are the department that most directly opposes the antagonists.

This does come with the benefit that by the nature of the role you will be roleplaying a lot which is excellent if you struggle to initiate roleplay. There is a lot of roleplay that can be had from attempting to de-escalate a situation or dealing with a traitor peacefully.

Notes

First few shifts

For your first few shifts I would reccomend telling the other officers that you are new and would like to shadow someone. It is fine if you need to shadow other officers for a while before you feel comfortable going off on your own, this is a very challenging department and it may take a while before you feel comfortable. Remember, this is a roleplaying game, no-one will think less of you for spending extra time in a learner role.

I would reccomend partnering up anyway while you are in security as it is a much better experience in my experience when you have someone else to mess around with while things are calm. It is also nice as you do not need to be as aware or robust to avoid getting killed by one of the many antagonists.

What to do When Things are Calm

If you spend the entire shift wandering the halls/maintenence just waiting for the antagonists to do something then you will not have a good time.

Mess with the other officers

Security is a role where you will often have time to just screw around, learn to do it and you will never be bored.

Mess with the roleplay oriented roles

You can go and ask the reporter to come with you to talk about their most recent article.

You can ask the librarian to see if they have any "restricted books"

You can ask chef for any particularly difficult recipie, threatening to report any health code violations to the HOP if they don't.

Make sure when you do this you do it in a way that does not actually harm the one you are interacting with,

Learn or practice Judo

If the shift has been particularly quiet, you can ask another officer to teach you Corprate Judo or if you already know it you can ask to practice.

Drink at the bar

Old reliable, just go to the bar, ask for a drink and start chatting.
